Case History: LED Bollard Lighting Fixtures For US Embassy Gabon Africa

LED Bollard Lighting FixturesBackground of Project
We were contacted by the US State Department in regards to lighting  the American Embassy in Gabon, Africa.  This embassy is built in the form of a compound that is designed to host diplomatic events.  It has a stately house for visiting dignitaries, a number of other buildings, a garden area lined with walkways, and a swimming pool.

Better lighting was needed in the areas between buildings, gardens, and along trails.  Before they contacted us, the State Department decided that LED bollard lighting would provide the best, most cost effective level of luminance for the job.

Challenges
The State Department had to make decisions about equipment and about functionality.  There were many kinds of bollards with LED lamps they had heard of, but they did not know which one was the best possible type.  Some are purely functional, whereas others are more decorative.

There was also the challenge of operations.  In Africa, electrical current operates on 50 Hz, whereas equipment here operates on 60 Hz.  Equipment would have to be located that could make the frequency conversion so American LED bollard lighting could run on the African power grid.

Equipment Features
The bollards we sold the State Department were both decorative and functional.  They were made from heavy, extruded aluminum.  They had polycarbonate, clear lenses with optical reflectors that distribute light at a wide throw angle.  Lamp life is extended by means of a patented heatsink.

The decorative nature of this LED bollard lighting system is undeniable.  A fine polyester powder coat, applied at 400 degrees, first treats the metal, and then enables bonding of paint to the surface.

To make LED bollard lighting manufactured in America work in Gabon, we had to use special equipment to handle the voltage conversion.  We sold the State Department a set of drivers that work like transformers.  Incoming voltage at 50 Hz is transformed into an output voltage of 60 Hz.

Solutions and Results
In accordance to standard shipping procedure when working with clients overseas, we used a central location here in the United States to ship all fixtures, documentation, and photometrics first prior to it being sent to the client.  In this case, the State Department had requested that we send everything to a designated location in New Jersey.

From there, the government arranged shipment of the LED bollard lighting equipment and specifications to the embassy in Gabon.  The equipment was installed per our recommended layout, and the new facility is now brighter and more attractive to visiting dignitaries than ever before.

RLLD Commercial Lighting  supplies contractor lighting fixtures, lamps, and accessories that are exclusively American made by the leading manufacturers in commercial lighting equipment.   New technology continues to improve the performance, cost effective operability, and longevity of fixtures in all of the following luminaire categories:

  • Area lights
  • Architectural lights
  • Parking lot lights
  • Decorative Lights
  • Commercial indoor lights
  • Factory and industrial lighting fixtures
  • Athletic and sport field lighting
  • Energy efficient fluorescent and LED lighting fixtures

Our system design and components have helped electrical contractors consistently exceed expectations in the areas of

  • Dark sky compliance
  • Electrical conservation
  • Reduced replacement costs resulting from longer lamp life

Each one of our success stories begins with a plan prior to a purchase order.

Unlike many online contractor lighting vendors, we do far more than list products and prices and transact business over the Internet.

We assume an ancillary, consultative stance on behalf of each and every client.  We gather the details of each project, and then use advanced photometric software to render foot candle plots and 3D models of the completed system.  Similar commercial lighting fixture types are input into the platform to compare operating costs, light output, and compliance to national and local code.

This allows us to see in advance what a particular system will do with specific contractor lighting fixtures, and which optics, mounts, poles, and locations will best serve the interest of the electrical team.

This makes is far easier for electrical specialists to choose the very best option out of a seemingly endless, and ever growing, array of lamp, housing, wattage, and accessory options.  Even the most experienced experts can get lost in the morass of too many choices, and too little time to look at all the facts pertaining to each particular component.

Most seasoned commercial lighting installers develop a preferred list of contractor lighting manufacturers and key pieces of equipment that they know will produce dependable results.  While this gives them the security of demonstrated, previous results, it may also prevent them from getting even better results from newly developed technology fresh on the market.

By guiding the purchase of equipment with both a mathematical and visual forecast of the finished project, it is much easier to determine which fixtures, light sources, and wattages will best perform under a specific set of circumstances in a particular area.  This is far more robust than the typical features, advantages, and benefits approach to equipment sales that many contractor lighting suppliers take.

By combining service with products, we make commercial lighting applications happen for both the electrical contractor and for the client they have been hired to accommodate.

Goose neck lamps can be incandescent, halogen, or fluorescent.  There are different sizes, fixture types, and wattages for lighting the exteriors and interiors of both barns and other buildings.  With the number of choices facing you, it may appear very difficult to choose which specific fixtures are best suited for your particular application.

When making these types of choices, we all have to balance light levels, light distribution patterns, cost of operation, and cost of lamp replacement to make the right choice.  National and local codes regulate these choices, and sometimes these regulations can be very strict in certain parts of the country.  We strongly urge you to contact our design team and explore your options through a photometric analysis.

RLLD Fracking Facility Lighting GARDENDALE – PHOTOMETRIC

Background

This case study featured the unique challenge of redesigning a fracking sand depot facility lighting system that had gone far over budget.  The original proposal called for unnecessarily high numbers of lighting poles and LED fixtures which were beyond the scope of the budget.

The organization we were contracted by is H2 Engineering, which is responsible for the construction of Halliburton’s new Garden Dale Facility in Catulla, Texas.  This is a facility where fracking sand is brought in on rail cars and loaded onto trucks.

The main work area is located at the end of a mile and a half roadway that loops back around on itself.  This allows trucks to line up, load up sand from silos where it is stored, then turn around on the loop to drive back out.   There is a total of 110,000 square feet of paved work area, along with several buildings housing a small work crew.

Challenge

Although H2 Engineering had already received a proposal for a fracking sand depot facility lighting system, they realized that the proposed system was far over budget.  The proposal called for costly LED roadway lighting, along with a foot candle density of 10 lumens per foot in the work area.  This was twice the foot candle average actually needed, and it called for costly LED roadway lights and far too many industrial area lighting poles.

H2 Engineering asked us to design a more cost effective system as follows:

  • A foot candle average of 1/10 lumens per foot along the road.
  • An average of 5 lumens per foot in the work area.
  • Fewer industrial area lighting poles.
  • Relocate three industrial lighting poles that were too close to the railroad track.

Equipment at a Glance

The new fracking sand depot facility lighting system that we proposed replaced the LED roadway lights with 400W pulse start metal halide fixtures.  We used 1000W pulse start metal halide fixtures for the work area and parking lot and paved work area.

Solution

The new pulse start metal halide lamps proposed in our fracking sand depot facility lighting system are energy efficient, with a longer lamp life than standard MH fixtures or high pressure sodium fixtures.

The new foot candle average along the roadway only need to be 1/10 lumens per foot, which is standard to roadway lighting.  The 400W fixtures we used were much less expensive than the originally proposed, LED lights.

We only needed to light the work area with 5 lumens per foot to create a bright, clear field of light.  Reducing the original 10 lumens per foot to 5 lumens per foot allowed us to reduce the number of industrial area lighting poles by approximately ½.

Although we reduced the number fracking sand depot facility lighting poles, the reflectors used in each fixture ensured the required light levels in all places.

  • Type 3 reflectors for the roadway lights throw light in both directions, creating an elongated pattern of light.
  • Type 4 reflectors were used to light the perimeter of the work area because they only shine light inward without wasting any spill light behind or around the pole.
  • Type 5 reflectors, which emit light in a circular direction, were used for the 3 poles we moved to the interior.

Results

The cost of our fracking sand depot facility lighting system fell within budget.  H2 Engineering have since hired us to implement a turnkey solution involving the digging of 6,000 feet of underground trenching, the design and installation of the electrical system, installation of bases and poles, and the installation and testing of the lights themselves.

Alameda, Ca Full Court Basketball Court Lighting Case Study

Custom Designed Full Court Basketball Court Lighting Systems

Lighting Photometric Of A Basketball Court Lighting System

A client in Alameda, CA named of Tim Fitz hired us to design needed a basketball court lighting system for his home sport court.  He already had a contractor to handle installing the equipment, and he found us online as a source of American made sport lighting equipment.

This is important.  When people buy basketball court lighting fixtures from overseas vendors, they don’t know what they are getting.  When they buy them from reputable American companies, they can count on quality assurance and trustworthy warranties.

Mr. Fitz also needed us to do a photometric lighting design that would show his contractor how to best install the equipment we provided.  In this particular instance, the most important thing the photometric design did for him was to calculate how many light poles would be needed for the project.

We also had to factor into our calculations the need to minimize light pollution.   The light would have to be at optimal levels of brightness on the court itself, but it would have to be contained in the play area within the court boundaries.

Designing a basketball court lighting system like this is not as easy as you might think it to be if you don’t have the right 3D modeling software.  Even with the best of math, it is impossible to see what your lighting system will actually do without having some kind of visual frame of reference to work with.

RLLD has this kind of  lighting design software and knows how to use it to customize basketball court lighting and other types of sport lighting configurations.  No two courts or stadiums are exactly alike—especially in the home sport court industry.

Using this design software in service to Mr. Fitz, we experimented with several different pole configurations light fixture types.  We eventually came up with a design that offered the best possible outcome. It was a 4 pole layout supporting full cutoff CXL sport lighting fixtures.

Full cutoff sport lights keep light from shining outside of designated boundaries.  This ensures compliance with increasingly strict dark sky laws now being passed in many places.  It is also a courtesy, regardless of local law, to show to neighbors who may find nearby bright lights disturbing to their sleep.

We capped off the project by adding a shipment of anchor bolts to secure the poles to concrete bases that Mr. Fitz had previously arranged for his contractor to pour onsite.  This fulfilled both the equipment and design requirements of the basketball court lighting project.

How to Customize a Small Basketball Court Lighting System

March 21st, 2011 by admin
Share

We recently sold sport court lights to a Malibu, CA resident who owns a small half-court basketball court.

Comparatively speaking, this was a small job to some of the other projects we normally handle.  However, smaller jobs like this are not uncommon in the residential marketplace.

Home sport court lights are often very small themselves.  They are also typically customized to the athletic preferences of the homeowner.  As such, standard sport court lighting kits cannot be used effectively.  Lighting systems have to be customized to the specific dimensions of the court.  They also have to take into account any mitigating factors that come to bear upon the project.

While a half-court basketball lighting system would seem very easy to build at face value, there were some challenges we had to face.

Malibu, CA has very strict light dark sky laws.  Light trespass into the night sky is strictly prohibited.

Also, the homeowners’ association to which Mr. Ruth belongs also further restricts light trespass by limiting sport lighting pole heights.  This ensures that all residents can sleep undisturbed, free from light spilling into their windows.

Per regulations, basketball light poles could be no more than sixteen feet tall

This height included the height of the pole base, which presented a bit of a difficulty.  No manufacturer of any kind of sport lighting poles makes poles and bases whose combined height total 16 feet.

Fortunately, we havevery solid relationships with basketball lighting equipment lighting manufacturers throughout the United States, so we were able to negotiate a special order.

We found a manufacturer who would be willing to cut the poles to any height we specified.  Since we already knew how tall the bases were, we were able to relay this information to the factory, who was happy to accommodate us.

The contractor had previously determined that no more than two poles were required.  After having them customized per spec, we arranged to have them drop shipped directly to Mr. Ruth’s contractor.

We also shipped two CXL series 1000W full cutoff basketball lighting fixtures.  These sport court lighting fixtures strictly restrict luminance within court boundaries and operate within full compliance with IDA standards.

Once all of this was accomplished, we had one more unforeseen need to meet.

One of the lenses in the CXL light fixtures was broken during shipment.  We assumed responsibility and took action.  We covered the cost of a three day air freight replacement at no additional cost to the client.  The delivery was handled so expeditiously that the replacement arrived in two days.

Decorative Parking lot Light Poles For Irving, TX McDonalds Restaurant

February 21st, 2011 by admin
Share

RLLD recently partnered in the renovation of a in Irving, TX flagship McDonalds which had contracted Stovall Construction, Inc. to work as its general contractor. Stovall is a renowned and impeccable general contractor who had been chosen to oversee, coordinate, and implement the upgrade of decorative aspects of the restaurant’s existing lighting system.

RLLD’s specific duty was to select and provide three decorative poles for key parking lot locations.

Stovall had already worked out their own photometrics and determined the locations of the  far in advance of contacting us.  All that remained was for us to find the very best decorative parking lot light poles to fit the specifications of their design.

Because these poles were primarily intended for site beautification, light levels were only of secondary importance.  General light was already in provided for by other fixture types.  This gave RLLD considerable freedom in choosing the very best pieces of attractive equipment for the job at hand.

After looking through many different models made by several leading manufacturers, we found one that that exceed the expectations of the general contractor.

These decorative parking lot light poles featured dual head fixtures supporting 250 watt metal halide lamps.  This contributed an accent to present general light, but the accent was not so bright as to create glaring white spots.  We might call this something of a soft touch addition to the restaurant parking area. While very subtle, it made a significant contribution to the attraction factor of the restaurant.

These decorative parking lot light poles are custom made from cast aluminum and support cast aluminum fixtures.  We ordered special customizations to pole aesthetics per client request.  Because none of the standard pole colors matched the exterior of the McDonalds, we requested a special color that was identical to a metallic treatment that Stovall Construction had applied to the trellises and the handrails of the restaurant exterior.

The result was a subliminal transference of architectural theme into the periphery of the parking lot itself.

Military Security Lighting System Grissom Air Force Base

February 9th, 2011 by admin
Share

Security lighting system being installed at Grissom Air Reserve Base in Grissom, Indiana. We were honored to recently partner with Innovative Technical Solutions Incorporated.  ITSI is a trusted contractor often employed by the US military.  Our joint venture was the design and installation of a new military security lighting system at Grissom Air Reserve Base.

The Air Reserve chose ITSI because of their history of successful infrastructure growth implementation.  ITSI chose RLLD Commercial Lighting as a GSA vendor because we sell all brands and types of premium, high-quality, American made light fixtures.  We also have enjoyed great success designing innovative lighting systems with unique applications of special products .

Our assistance in finding the right type of lighting equipment for this military security lighting system worked so synchronistically with ITSI’s expertise in renovation and retrofits that we actually were able to help them prepare their government bed package.  Our 20 pages of a 400 page document itemized our equipment costs down at a line item level that exceeded government expectations.

The military security lighting system would to be installed in a portion of the airfield where planes are parked when landing and deiced.  Existing lights were old and outdated, so luminance was grossly inadequate.

New military specifications required that the jet parking area have a luminance at a minimum of 1 foot candle.  In the deicing area, luminance needed to be a minimum 5 foot candles.

While achieving these measurements would be simple, the challenge at hand lay in using existing 80 foot light poles.  ITSI could not put new poles in, and we had to increase light levels very carefully to avoid overloading the poles with too much physical weight.  Wind zone laws always limit how much weight a pole can legally support, so this was a balancing act, to be sure.

We came up with the innovative plan to use athletic stadium lights to build this military security lighting system.  This may seem odd, but it was actually the best choice because stadium lights throw light for incredible distances without light levels dropping.  For an airfield measuring 1.8 million square feet total, this was really our only viable choice at the end of the day.

Every fixture deployed featured NEMA 2 that creates this tight beam spread to carry for a long and focused distance.  High pressure sodium 1000W lamps were used in these fixtures because of their extended life rating of 20,000 hours and consequent minimal ongoing maintenance requirements.

Both the Air Reserve and ITSI were also very thankful for a quick response on our part for a redesign need that surfaced mid-project.  When ITSI discovered a waterline and had to move an existing light pole, we redesigned the military security lighting system with our photometric software in time for project deadline.
